David McDivitt Responds to NPR on Youth Sports Concussions

Recently, NPR’s “Here & Now” program addressed the risks of concussions in youth sports and the still prevalent “walk it off” response from coaches and staff in many youth sports programs. David McDivitt has written a letter responding to the issue:

Dear Here and Now,

My name is David McDivitt, and I wanted to write in regarding safety in youth sports, concussions, and the dangers of minimizing head injuries with a “walk it off” attitude when kids get hurt. Often times, the “walk it off” attitude stems from a lack of awareness of the severity and long-term dangers of closed head injuries. Just because you cannot see the injury doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. On a daily basis we work with people whose lives have been permanently altered by head injuries – from decreased attention spans to an inability to hold down a job, and even worse. These injuries can be devastating to the people directly hurt, their families, and their friends.

Young people are even more susceptible to these injuries because their brains are not yet fully developed.

Our firm is active in promoting safety for children: we encourage better driving habits and emphasize the importance of wearing a helmet while riding bikes. Schools and youth sports teams could also help keep kids safe – not just through protective equipment, but by putting safety as the priority over winning the game.

If parents, schools and youth sports teams would put greater emphasis on safety, that mind-set will carry through for the rest of their children’s lives, ensuring their well-being on the field and when they walk off of it as well.

Thank you for highlighting these dangers and perpetuating a necessary dialogue.

Sincerely,

David McDivitt

Denver Offering Two More Free Days of Bike Sharing Program

June 13, 2012

While bicycling can be a healthy and environmentally friendly way of getting around town, the purchase price of a bicycle is a significant expense. The City of Denver has offered city residents a solution to this problem by creating a public bicycle sharing program that runs across the city. According to the Denver Post, citizens can utilize the program for two more days for free.

Parry Burnap, Executive Director of Denver Bike Sharing, explains that the free days are being offered to expose more of the Denver community to the benefits of riding a bike. He went on to say, “This is a great way for people to join in the celebration of Bike to Work Month and get their riding legs ready for Bike to Work Day on June 27.”

Normally, the cost of the program is $8 per day in Denver and $5 per day in Boulder and is free for trips of 30 minutes or less. However, there will be no cost to try the program today and next Wednesday, June 20th.

The bikes are picked up and returned at automated kiosks spread across both cities.

The Denver Personal Injury Lawyers with the McDivitt Law Firm would like to remind anyone who utilizes this program to always wear a helmet when bicycling. Doing so will greatly decrease your chances of injury in the event of a Denver Auto Accident involving a vehicle and your bicycle.

Student Video Contest Returns with Not One, but Two Winners!

Our fifth annual PSA contest was a huge success! This year, we received a total of 30 video entries from local area students! We asked students to create original videos about safe driving and how to prevent problems such as distracted driving, lack of seat belt use, and impaired driving.

We are excited to announce that this year’s contest yielded not one, but two first place winners! Daniel Carr, a 9th grade homeschool student in Woodland Park, and Michelle Manthei, a 12th grade student at Coronado High School.

Both students utilized green screen techniques to create impressive special effects to caution others of the dangers of texting while driving. Daniel’s PSA features the grim reaper, who does his best to distract a driver, while Michelle’s PSA is an out of this world experience, including spaceships!

We gave our contest winners the choice of a laptop computer with movie-making software or a $1,500 gift card. Both Daniel and Michelle chose gift cards as their prizes. Michelle’s school will also be receiving a donation, and a donation will be made to Drive Smart Colorado on behalf of Daniel. Both PSAs also will be aired on local television, so keep an eye out and let us know when you see them on TV!

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo the Right Way—Get a Safe Ride Home

Because Cinco de Mayo is widely celebrated in southern Colorado, we’ll be hosting our ongoing Safe and Sober Free Cab Ride Home program in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Pueblo West.

We’ve helped a lot of people whose lives have been impacted by drunk driving, which is why we believe so strongly in our Safe and Sober program and want to keep the roads safe for everyone. In fact, we’ve covered the cost for more than 7,000 rides home since 2007.

One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Cab.
Our Safe and Sober Free Cab Ride Home program is for adults who have been drinking or who don’t have a safe way home. Rides will be available in Colorado Springs from 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, through 3 a.m., on Sunday, May 6.

For a free ride home, call one of the following cab companies and tell them your ride home is on McDivitt Law Firm:

  • Colorado Springs
Call Yellow Cab Company of Colorado Springs at (719) 777-7777.
  • Pueblo & Pueblo West
Call City Cab of Pueblo at (719) 543-2525.

Remember, rides are provided to your home—not to other drinking locations. Due to the high number of ride requests on Cinco de Mayo, we can’t guarantee rides for everyone who calls; however, every attempt will be made to accommodate all requests.

Did You Know…?
Widely misperceived as Mexico’s Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo is actually the anniversary of when 4,000 Mexican soldiers forced the French out of Puebla, Mexico, in 1862.
